University of Alberta

University of Alberta
Profile
The University of Alberta was established in 1908; just three years after Alberta officially became a province.
The main campus nestled along the North Saskatchewan River in Alberta's capital city of Edmonton, has145 buildings on 92 hectares of land. In addition to its main campus, the university includes Campus Saint Jean, a French-language campus located close to the main campus, and Augustana Campus, located in Cam rose, Alberta, approximately 100 km from Edmonton. The U of A also has numerous degree-granting partnerships with colleges throughout rural and urban Alberta.
The U of A has more than 1,500 full-time faculty members and approximately 36,500 full and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. More than 80 members of the Royal Society of Canada have been among a distinguished faculty that leads the country in 3M Awards for Teaching Excellence – Canada's highest undergraduate teaching honour. Nearly one in four students at the U of A comes from outside the province, and 127 countries of origin are represented in the student body.
Areas of established and emerging research excellence on a national or international scale include world-class nanotechnology research, diabetes research, drug discovery and development, and geoenvironmental and petroleum engineering. The U of A's TEC Edmonton has spurred development of 70 active and early stage spin-off companies.
Housing
On-campus: The University can accommodate 4,012 students in dormitory-style residences, apartments and houses in Edmonton. Spaces vary from single and double occupancy to shared apartments and houses and are available for full-time undergraduate and graduate students. Rates range from $3,912 – $7,624 for an eight-month room and board contract to $289 - $950/month/person for apartments and houses. Augustana campus can accommodate students in dormitory-style residences for an eight month room and board contract with rates ranging from $5,016 - $6,110. When applying, students can indicate their top two residence preferences. However, due to the high demand and guaranteed housing policies, each U of A residence has student group preferences (i.e. first year under-graduate, graduate student, family). Also, preference is given to students who live outside the greater Edmonton area. For further information on residence options, priorities and rates, please visit
www.ualberta.ca/residences.
Off-campus: There is ample off-campus housing available within walking distance or a quick bus ride away from the main campus. Average rates for bachelor, complete one-bedroom and complete two-bedroom apartments are: $619, $708 and $924, respectively. The Students' Union provides a housing registry for use by all students (www.su.ualberta.ca/services_and_businesses/services/infolink/housing).
Edmonton boasts a superb public transit system including its fast, clean and quiet Light Rail Transit system, which uses a blend of surface and underground stations, one of which is on the U of A campus. Used in combination with bus transit, the LRT can take you anywhere in the city of Edmonton to and from the U of A. In addition, the U of A Student Union has organized a Carpool Registry to help students find a ride (or riders) to and from school.
Information technology
The University has a campus-wide network of 43 instructional computer labs with 1,379 work stations (PC, Mac and UNIX) available for general student use. The university is working towards a centrally-supported wireless service. At present, several university departments support wireless networks, supplementing its existing laptop connection facilities. Students and staff can log on to the university's network while they are off campus through their Internet service provider. Some of the residences have access to computer labs while others have high-speed access to campus computer networks and the Internet. Students in residences are provided communications services (telephone and Internet) for a fee. These services utilize the university's infrastructure and contracted services. Fees are based on a full cost recovery model; however, students are not required to subscribe to this service. The university has state-of-the-art technology in the 118 electronically-enhanced smart classrooms that allow instructors to integrate computer, multimedia and network technology into their lectures. The U of A is the largest WebCT installation in Canada with more than 150,000 student registrations in over 2,000 course sections each academic year.
